Doyin Okupe and 11 others expelled by Ogun chapter of Labour party

Doyin Okupe, the Director-General of Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, has been expelled by Ogun state chapter of the party alongside 11 others, for violating its constitution.

Ogun LP chairman Michael Ashade and the party’s secretary Feyisola Michael who briefed newsmen at the end of their meeting on Thursday, December 1, alleged that Okupe and others have refused to pay their membership dues in the last six months, despite numerous notice of debt.

Others stripped of their membership of the party include Abayomi Collins, Hon. Abel Olaleye, Jagun Lookman, Olori Oluwabukola Soyoye, Mr. Gbadebo Fesomade, (former State Treasurer), Mr. Abdulmalik Olaleye (former State Youth Leader), Mr Jide Amusan( former State Publicity Secretary); Mr. Adeshina Wasiu Shojobi (former Asst State Youth Leader); Miss Deborah Adewale (former Senatorial Women Leader Ogun East) and Mr. Olatunde Abolade (former Asst State Secretary).

polarising the party in Ogun State with his Peoples Democraric Party (PDP) “dissidents political liabilities who are only using LP to revive their political and financial lifelines”, also asked him to provide evidence of any payment in respect of membership dues prior to December 1, 2022.

They also asked the national chairman of the party, Barr. Julius Abure and the party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to obey the party’s constitution by immediately relieving Okupe of his position as DG of PCC and also appoint another DG who should come from the North to reflect federal characters and political balance.

Anchoring their action on Article 9(3)xi of the party’s constitution, Ashade said;

“Only fully registered and financially up-to-date members of the Party shall have the right to vie for office in the Ward Executive, Local Government Area Executive, State Executive Councils and the National Working Committee of the Party or be a delegate to the Congresses and the National Convention.

“Article 9(3)iii of our Party’s Constitution states as follows: ‘only members who pay their monthly membership dues at rates prescribed shall be deemed to be bonafide members of the Party. Arrears of dues of up to six months shall lead to forfeiture of membership.’

Despite repeated demands from various meetings I had with Dr. Doyin Okupe in respect of his mandatory constitutional requirements to fulfill membership status, he has failed woefully in this regard with some others to flagrantly disobey the constitution of Labour party.

“… In line with article 19(3) of the Labour Party constitutional provision, we declare that Dr. Doyin Okupe, having failed in the payment of his membership dues for the last six months of joining the Party, has forfeited his membership of the Party and no longer fit and competent to continue to act as the DG of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

We hereby notify our National Chairman Bar Julius Abure and Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that it’s expedient to obey the constitution of Labour party by immediately appoint another DG for the PCC and that should come from the North to reflect Federal Characters and political balance.”

Gunmen kidnap Abuja-bound passengers in Kogi

Suspected kidnappers have abducted an unspecified number of passengers in an 18-seater bus in Kogi State.

The incident happened at Ochadamu, along Anyigba-Itobe road in Ofu Local Government Area of the state around 4pm on Monday November 28.

The bus was said to be heading for Abuja from the eastern region of the country.

It was gathered that the hoodlums in their numbers flagged down the bus at gunpoint and whisked the passengers to the bush.

The locals added further that kidnapping activities in the Ochadamu flash point had reduced drastically, but picked up recently after the army checkpoint in the areas were dismantled following a fatal accident on the highway.

The security operatives, including the vigilantes in the areas were said to be making frantic efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims since the incident happened.

Navy Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), the state security adviser to Governor Yahaya Bello, who confirmed the incident on Thursday, December 1, 2022, to Daily Trust, said the state government is on top of it.

He stated that the state government had put enough measures in place to stem the tide of criminal activities in the area.

He said since the hoodlums were coming back to operate on the road again, the government would rejig its measures, adding that the hoodlums would be neutralised shortly.

“We have fought them; we will fight them; and we will continue to fight them until they are neutralised in that axis of the state. Security agents have been alerted and they will do the needful,” he said

Aminu Adamu Mohammed, the student of Federal University, Dutse, who was arrested for tweeting a derogatory comment about First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari.

Accompanied by a photograph of Aisha Buhari, Mohammed had put up a tweet, which reads in Hausa, “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi.” The tweet simply translates as “Mama has eaten poor people’s money and is now full.”

His lawyer, C.K Agu told BBC Hausa that he was arraigned in court by the police on Tuesday, November 29, where he pleaded not guilty when the charges against him were read out.

Agu further revealed that they’ve made several efforts since November 25  to get the student released on bail but to no avail.

“Even in the court session yesterday, we notified the judge about the efforts made to have him released on bail, but we did not receive any reply from the police.

Protests Over Arrest Of University Student Who Criticised Aisha Buhari

…..Aisha Buhari Must Face Prosecution For Ordering Arrest, Assault Of Nigerian Student Over Tweet – Police Service Commissioner, Najatu

Outrage has trailed the arrest of a student of Federal University Dutse (FUD), Aminu Adamu Mohammed, over a Twitter post he made against Mrs Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, where he wrote in Hausa language “Su mama Anchi Kudin Talakawa an koshi”, meaning “Mama has fed fat on poor people’s money”.

Mohammed, from Azare, Bauchi State, is a final year student at the Department of Environmental Management of the university.

He was said to have been arrested by plainclothes policemen and tortured. The person who leaked the arrest was equally reported to have been arrested and beaten into coma.

The critics have accused Mrs Buhari of being responsible for the arrest after the father of Aminu, who received a call from his son, said he told him he was beaten and taken to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, the parents of Mohammed asked the first lady to forgive their son.

Shehu Baba Azare, a younger brother of Aminu Adamu’s father, told the BBC Hausa that they needed their son to be released to them.

He said, “We were not aware of it until five days later, when Aminu’s friend called my brother (Aminu’s father) and told him that he hadn’t seen Aminu for the past five days.

The next day, Aminu called his father and told him that he was arrested and taken to Aisha Buhari at the Presidential Villa and that he was beaten and detained. He said one of the securitymen gave him his phone to make the call.

“Adamu (Aminu’s father) also told me that he was called from the university informing him that his son was arrested but without their knowledge. We are begging the First Lady; please forgive him, you are a mother.”

According to BBC Hausa, the source said the arrest has caused a lot of concern in the university and also among parents considering the security situation in the country.

Although the masterminds of the arrest are unknown, the attention of critics has remained glued on the first lady who has not spoken on the matter.

Her spokesman has equally kept mum over the incident as Barrister Aliyu Abdullahi, Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the First Lady, neither picked calls nor replied a text message from our reporter.

What critics said

Najatu Mohammed, a commissioner in the Police Service Commission (PSC), had requested for the prosecution of the first lady for taking the law into her own hands.

In an interview with Daily Nigerian, she said her alleged action must be condemned by all Nigerians and called on security operatives to arrest and prosecute the first lady.

She doesn’t have the right to do that. In fact, she should be prosecuted for doing just that. She has taken the law into her hands. She has taken the place and the responsibilities of the commander-in-chief.

“I think Nigerians should rise up and say no to this. We will no longer accept this tyranny. Buhari left a vacuum in leadership that is why all manner of people grabbed it.

“The same woman who said Mamman Daura had taken over her husband’s government has now become a tyrant. It is apparent she didn’t make that statement for God and the country but her selfish interest. This is not the first time she is doing this. She did it to her former ADC a couple of years ago… That boy was kept in prison for months. It took our intervention for him to be released. This is really a terrible thing to have happened.

The rights activist wondered why the president’s wife and the security agencies had not been able to tame the growing insecurity in the country with the same vigor used in taming perceived critics.

“I want to ask our security men, why haven’t they been able to track down bandits and killers all over the country? Nigeria has become a killing machine. Women are being raped every single day, and their husbands are being killed.

Millions have been made orphans. I have never known a time when Mrs Buhari even sympathized with these people, let alone get the bandits or culprits tracked down and taken to prison or even prosecuted. We have never heard that. She has become so egocentric, she has become the law in herself. Because of the irresponsibility of Nigerians who have allowed this to happen.

“This is our country. We have permanent right over our leaders. We didn’t vote for Aisha Buhari or any of these hangers on around Buhari. We voted for Buhari, and the same peasants, artisans, students, and general people of this country that voted for Buhari are now getting the exact opposite of what they hoped for. ”

Also reacting, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police for the unconditional release of the arrested student.

The national treasurer of NANS and the chairman in charge of North West, Bashir Sulaiman Limanci, at a press briefing in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, condemned the arrest and detention of Adamu who is to start his final examination on December 6.

The students threatened to convoke a nationwide protest against the police and Mrs Buhari.

Meanwhile, the management of FUD has said the university was not in session when the incident happened, thus, the student was not under their care when he made the post on Twitter.

“The unfortunate incident involving Aminu Adamu, who made a Twitter post, happened during the break. He did the posting in his capacity as Aminu Adamu, not as a student of FUD.

He was trailed to Dutse where he was arrested. The university authorities have spoken to the parents who have already engaged the services of a lawyer to handle the matter and they are hopeful for an amicable resolution soon,” the university’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Bello, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the police in Jigawa said they were not aware of the arrest.

The spokesman, Lawan Adam, said any arrest by the police out of the Jigawa command must be communicated to the police in Jigawa before it would take effect.

He said in this particular incident, the command had yet to be communicated on any arrest by the police outside the state.

Police headquarters reacts to court order sentencing IGP to three months in prison

The Nigeria Police Force has reacted to the judgment delivered today November 29 by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court, Abuja sentencing the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba to three months in prison for disobeying a court order.

Olajuwon issued the ruling following a suit filed by Patrick Okoli, a former police officer who claims he was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian police force.

According to the affidavits in support of the suit, the applicant was forcefully retired in June 1992. After challenging his forceful retirement, a Bauchi high court on February 19, 1994, delivered judgment in favor of the applicant and quashed the letter of compulsory retirement. Read here.

Reacting to the judgment sentencing the IGP, the spokesperson of the Police Force CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said that the office of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, did not disregard a court order or rule of law as it was not aware of it.

The statement in part reads

“It is instructive to note that the case in point concerns an officer who was dismissed as far back as 1992, a few years after the current IGP joined the Nigeria Police Force, based on available facts gleaned from the reports.

The most recent judgement on the matter was given in 2011 which should ordinarily not fall under the direct purview of the current administration of the Force. Thus, the news is strange and astonishing.

The IGP has however directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Force Legal Unit to investigate the allegation in a bid to ascertain the position of the court and proffer informed legal advice for the IGP’s prompt and necessary action.

The Inspector-General of Police reiterates his commitment to upholding the rule of law and synergizing with the judiciary to ensure quick dispensation of justice for an improved criminal justice system.”

World Cup pundit and former Germany striker, Sandro Wagner forced to apologise after referring to Qatari attire as ‘bathrobes’

World Cup pundit and former Germany forward, Sandro Wagner has been forced to apologise after referring to Qatari traditional dress as ‘bathrobes’.

Wagner was commenting for German broadcasters ZDF in his country’s 1-1 draw with Spain on Sunday Nivember 27, when he made the comment about the traditional thaub dress.

Towards the end of the game at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, the 35-year-old said he had thought one end of the ground was filled with German fans wearing the country’s famous white shirt.

‘I thought before that the whole corner was full of German fans. Then I realised it was the Qatari bathrobes,’ Wagner said.

He was referring to the thaub, the traditional white robes with long sleeves worn by many men in Qatar and Arab region.

Wagner tweeted an apology on Twitter on Monday.

‘It was an ill-considered saying with an inappropriate remark that I would be better off not saying. If anyone felt offended – sorry, that was zero point zero my intention.’

German broadcaster ZDF has stated that there will be no further consequences for Wagner, who will resume his co-commentating duty on Wednesday’s game between Poland and Argentina.

ZDF replied to some of the complaints on Twitter with a short statement: ‘Sandro Wagner´s comments about the thaub, unfortunately, occurred during an emotional phase of the game. He’s not permitted (to say that). We´ll talk about it.’

Wagner made eight international appearances for Germany during his career, playing for Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim among a host of German clubs.

Native doctor machetes his neighbor to death for always accusing him of stealing

A native doctor identified as Idowu Talabi, was on Sunday November 27 arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for killing his 30-year-old co-tenant, Isau Oluwatobiloba.

The suspect was arrested following a report lodged at Ikenne divisional headquarters by the wife of the deceased, who reported that she returned from Church vigil at about 6:00 am only to discover the lifeless body of her husband lying in the pool of his blood in their house at No 4, Best way Moro street Ikenne, after being killed by an unknown person.

Upon the report, the DPO Ikenne division, CSP Ibrahim Ningi, led his detectives to the scene, where it was discovered that the deceased was matcheted to death while sleeping on his bed. It was also discovered that there was no break-in at the scene and nothing was removed from the room.

These discoveries pointed to the fact that the killing was carried out by an insider, hence all the occupants of the house were invited to the station for interrogation.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said after a thorough investigation, Idowu Talabi, who claimed to be a native doctor confessed to being the person that killed the deceased.

When asked the reason for the dastardly act, the suspect alleged that the deceased was fond of accusing him of stealing. He said he decided to kill the deceased after realising he was alone at home sleeping.

The cutlass he used to commit the crime has since been recovered.

Abimbola said the state commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to Homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and prosecution.

DNA helps woman locate her family 51 years after she was kidnapped as a baby by babysitter

More than 50 years after her babysitter kidnapped her as a baby in Texas, an American woman has reunited with her family, who tracked their missing loved one down with a DNA test and without help from law enforcement or other outside involvement.

The incredible story of the disappearance of Melissa Highsmith ended in South Carolina, US on Saturday, November 26 according to a report from the Charleston television news station WCIV as well as a news release from her family.

Highsmith was a year old in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1971 when her mother, Alta Apantenco, published a newspaper advertisement asking for a babysitter.

Apatenco hired a woman who expressed interest in the job without ever meeting her in person.

DNA helps woman locate her family 51 years after she was kidnapped as a baby by babysitter

When the woman came to start the job, Apatenco’s roommate handed baby Melissa over to the babysitter, who allegedly abducted her and never returned her.

Loved ones of Highsmith reported her missing to police and for over 50 years her family threw birthday parties for her every November.

Recently they also created a Facebook page named “Finding Melissa Highsmith” and solicited help in finding their missing relative.

Then, in September this year, loved ones of Highsmith received an anonymous tip that she was around Charleston, which is more than 1,100 miles from Fort Worth.

The family used the results of a DNA test, a birthmark on Melissa and her birthday to confirm that she indeed was the girl who had been taken from them 51 years ago.

On Saturday, during a celebration at the family’s church in Fort Worth, Melissa reunited with her mother, her father and two of her four siblings, the group said in a statement obtained by the Guardian on Monday.

“I couldn’t stop crying,” sister Victoria Garner said in the statement. “I was overjoyed, and I’m still walking around in a fog trying to comprehend that my sister [was] right in front of me and that we found her.”

In the family’s statement, another sister Sharon Highsmith, who lives in Spain and plans to meet Melissa this Christmas described how her relatives had turned to law enforcement officials for assistance. But it was their own private search for Melissa, which included the 23andMe test, that paid off.

Sharon Highsmith said her family connected with a clinical laboratory scientist and amateur genealogist named Lisa Jo Schiele to help them with interpreting the key DNA results and mining publicly available records to locate Melissa.

“Our family has suffered at the hands of agencies who have mismanaged this case,” Sharon Highsmith said. “Right now, we just want to get to know Melissa, welcome her to the family and make up for 50 years of lost time.”

It wasn’t immediately clear Monday what happened to the babysitter.

Sharon Highsmith said she was particularly thankful for her mother, who in addition to being filled with guilt after Melissa’s disappearance had faced accusations that she had possibly killed her missing daughter and hidden the crime.

“My mom did the best she could with the limited resources she had – she couldn’t risk getting fired, so she trusted the person who said they’d care for her child,” Sharon Highsmith’s statement said. “I’m grateful … we have vindication for my mom.”

The family statement said Melissa’s mother, her father Jeffrie Highsmith, and her siblings – Garner, Sharon Highsmith, Rebecca Del Bosque, and Jeff Highsmith – all had a simple message for people searching for missing loved ones.

“Never give up,” the statement said. “Chase every lead.”

APC Raises ₦‎190 Million In Donations In Less Than Two Minutes

Owo Dey Plenty : Nigerians Show Confidence In APC As Party Raises N190m In Less Than Two Minutes Of Launching Crowd Funding

What other word can you use to describe confidence? What other explanation can you offer for people’s allegiance to a political party? What other way may people demonstrate trust at a party?

The APC has just broken a fundraising record in the annals of our political history. Today at The Civic Center, V.I, Lagos, the APC Presidential Campaign Council unveiled a crowdfunding APP for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima and in less than two minutes raised over, N190m. Considering that no individual can donate more than N50 million, this is good news for the APC and a big boost to the ruling party.

This demonstrates that Nigerians believe in the ability of the APC presidential candidate and his running mate to make Nigeria better. It’s a question of putting your money where your mouth is; we recently learned that South East businessmen gave N1 billion to Tinubu/ Shettima’s candidacy, and now the crowdfunding is picking up like UP MAD.

While the LP celebrated raising ten million in 24 hours, the APC, which the opposition claims Nigerians are sick of, raised 192 million in a matter of minutes.

What else can we say except that the APC has been accepted by the general public, that action talks louder than words, and that Nigerians have taken affirmative action that has dwarfed their voices?
