A yet-to-be-identified driver was arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority for ramming into a pedestrian and causing bodily injuries in the Mile 2 area of the state on Sunday.
The LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement made available to PUNCH Metro on Sunday, noted that the driver had sped through a busy section of the road leading to the collision with the pedestrian.
He added that operatives of the LASTMA who were at the scene of the accident swiftly rescued the victim to a nearby hospital in the area.
Taofiq said, “In a harrowing incident that occurred today, the driver of a Toyota Camry, bearing the registration number KTU 447 EV, recklessly sped through a busy section of Ewenla/Charity near Oshodi, heading towards Mile 2.
“Tragically, the driver’s negligent actions resulted in the grievous injury of a pedestrian, who sustained severe bodily harm after being struck by the vehicle.
“The victim, who had suffered serious injuries across multiple parts of his body, was promptly rushed to Comfort Hospital in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi for urgent medical care.”
The LASTMA spokesperson noted that the driver was however apprehended and handed over to police officers from the Mafoluku police station for onward investigation and prosecution.
“The driver of the Toyota Camry was subsequently apprehended by LASTMA officers at the scene and following due procedure, both the driver and the vehicle were handed over to officers from the Mafoluku Police Station for further investigation into the circumstances of the accident.”
Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stressed the need for motorists to always exercise caution while driving.
Bakare-Oki who spoke through Taofiq stressed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that traffic laws in Lagos State were adhered to strictly.
“The LASTMA authorities urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, emphasising that the safety of pedestrians and fellow motorists is paramount.
“The LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his deep concern for the victim’s well-being and extended heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery.
“He also reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring that road safety laws are strictly enforced to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Taofiq concluded.
PUNCH Metro reported last Friday that an unidentified driver escaped death after a 40-foot container fell in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.
The incident, according to Taofiq, had occurred at about 5 pm last Thursday.
Taofiq noted that a black Toyota Jeep with number plate AAA 144 GU was impacted by the incident, but the driver miraculously escaped unharmed.
He added that the driver of the containerised truck had, however, sustained severe injuries.
