What Is Dog Health Insurance?

Dog health insurance is a type of plan that pet parents can buy to help offset the cost of veterinary care, medication, vaccinations, and other medical treatments that their pup may need. Unlike human health insurance, dog health insurance contracts don’t typically cover preventative care and wellness. However, some elite programs provide extra coverage for diagnostics and vaccinations.Types of Coverage

When researching dog health insurance options, you may find that there are a variety of coverage plans depending on the company. Many companies offer different tiers of coverage, such as basic, comprehensive, and deluxe. Here is an overview of each type of coverage:

  • Basic Coverage: Basic coverage typically covers accidents and illnesses, with a cap on the amount that they will reimburse you. Some companies require that you pay a co-pay once the reimbursement limit has been reached. Additionally, such plans usually have an annual deductible.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Comprehensive coverage is designed to cover a wider range of vet care expenses, including treatments, routine care, preventative care, and genetics-related illnesses and conditions. As with most types of health insurance, this type of plan usually has an annual deductible and co-payments for large claims.
  • Deluxe Coverage: Deluxe Coverage offers the broadest coverage, covering all the same services as comprehensive coverage, in addition to genetic disorders, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment and evidence-based nutritional programs. This type of plan is typically the most expensive, but it provides the most protection for your pup.
